How to choose a therapist who suits you

What to look for, what to ask on an introductory call, and how to know a therapeutic relationship is truly helping you heal.

How to choose a therapist who suits you

Choosing a therapist is one of the most personal decisions you can make. The right fit goes beyond credentials: it is about feeling heard, respected and safe enough to be honest about what hurts.

Start by naming what you want help with, whether that is anxiety, grief, burnout or a relationship pattern you want to change. Different therapists specialise in different approaches, from talking therapies to body-based and water-based work, and matching the method to your needs matters.

Use an introductory call to notice how you feel. Do you feel rushed or genuinely listened to? Does the therapist explain their approach in plain language? Trust that instinct. A good therapist welcomes questions about experience, session structure and how progress is measured.

Finally, give the relationship a few sessions before deciding, but know that changing direction is always allowed. The goal is a partnership that helps you feel steadier, clearer and more yourself.
